Exposures: School-to-Career Mentoring Program

| HomeForms and Schedule |

The Exposures: School-to-Career Program is designed to give 10th grade students in the Downriver Career Technical Consortium districts (Airport, Flat Rock, Gibraltar, Grosse Ile, Huron, Riverview, Southgate, Trenton, and Woodhaven-Brownstown, plus Downriver High School) a four-day (20 hours) mentoring experience in the area or areas they believe they would like to pursue as a career.

These 10th grade students have verbally expressed their interest area(s) and this expressed interest(s) is/are supported through a career assessment (the CareerScope Assessment).

An application process is used, with the home school counselors/school-to-career contact selecting the participants.  The students are then placed by the Downriver Career Technical Consortium School-to-Career Coordinator, Sandi Loso, who oversees this program.

The students' attire requirements are determined by their mentor/employer.  Students are on the site from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Transportation is provided through our career-technical bussing system.  Lunch provisions are determined by the employer.  Attendance is mandatory for all four days.  This is a commitment the students have chosen to participate in.  In case of illness, the student is to call Mrs. Loso AND their mentor.  This information is provided to the student during a meeting with Mrs. Loso, one week prior to their first STC session.

Once a student is selected to participate in the STC program, an acceptance letter is sent home that provides all necessary details such as worksite, acceptable attire, lunch provisions, etc.

Wednesday is the designated School-to-Career day.  These Wednesday dates are determined at the end of the previous school year.  The FIRST SESSION begins with three Wednesdays scheduled in October and one in November.  Al alternate day is included in each session in case of inclement weather.  There is an Appreciation Breakfast scheduled in November for students, parents, and mentors.  The SECOND SESSION consists of two Wednesday in February and two in March.  An Appreciation Breakfast is scheduled in March.

This School-to-Career experience is offered to the 10th graders because the sophomore year is a very important year in planning/scheduling for the remaining two years in high school.  Participation in the mentoring program allows the student to see if this is the career area they do or do not want to continue pursuing.  They can then select classes they will need during their 11th and 12th grade years.  This information can also help guide them in the type of training/education they will need following high school graduation.
